What you'll see on the route

Samshvilde is one of Georgia's oldest cities and its largest archaeological site. It's an abandoned settlement stretching about 2.5 km long and 400 meters wide. In its prime, it was a major political and religious hub. Samshvilde is unique for its geography — the city is literally "squeezed" between two deep canyons. The site is still an active archaeological dig, and the lack of touristy stuff (no asphalt or cafes) keeps that mysterious, ancient vibe alive.

The route kicks off with a walk through the gorge. We'll head through a lush, mossy forest along the Khrami River. It's a deep, rocky canyon that creates a rugged, beautiful backdrop for the ruins of the ancient city. The gorge drops down 300 meters, and you can spot giant eagles soaring from the cliffs.

The highlight of the route is the ancient settlement itself, perched on a narrow rocky cape.
The most iconic monument is the Samshvilde Sioni. You'll see the eastern wall with its apses and a unique Georgian inscription in the ancient Asomtavruli script, which mentions Byzantine emperors.

A clear street about 500–1000 meters long, lined with stone walls, leads from the city entrance to the citadel. We'll also stop by the small, cozy Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God. Along the way, we might even run into Kolya, an elderly local donkey :)

trail details

During the tour, we'll explore the canyon and hike along forest paths. Expect some vines, moss, and rocks. We'll be heading down to the canyon floor, which means a fairly steep descent and then a climb back up. Your best bet is to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes with non-slip soles and use trekking poles. Skip the sneakers with flat soles or sandals.

When it's warm, ticks get active outside the city. Keep this in mind: wear high socks and leggings or pants you can tuck into them. It's a good idea to use tick repellent and do a quick check once you're back home.

*Just a reminder: this is a hike — a day trip on mountain or forest trails that requires proper shoes and a small daypack with snacks. It's a bit more active than just a casual walk in a city park.

The difficulty level is rated specifically for this type of route.
