Fairytale pine forest and a smooth climb
We start from the ranger station in Likani. The trail immediately leads us deep into the park, following a mountain stream through thick, ancient coniferous forest. The climb here is steady but very gentle, winding and comfortable. In about 2.5–3 hours at a relaxed pace, we gain the main elevation and reach the Chitakhevi Ridge (about 1300–1400 meters above sea level).
Chitakhevi Ridge and panoramic views
Once on the ridge, we hit a relatively flat plateau. The forest opens up in places, revealing stunning views of the canyons and peaks of the Borjomi Nature Reserve. It's the perfect spot for a one-hour break to eat lunch and soak in the quiet, pine-scented air.
Kvabiskhevi Gorge
After resting, we begin the descent into Kvabiskhevi. This section is quite steep, with the trail zigzagging down the forested slope. Trekking poles will be a lifesaver here to save your knees. Near the end of the descent, the trail leads to picturesque cliffs and meadows in the Kvabiskhevi river valley, where you can catch your breath, splash some cool water on your face, and walk the final flat kilometer to the finish.
