Fairytale pine forest and a smooth climb
We start from the ranger station in Likani. The trail immediately pulls us deep into the park, following a mountain river through thick, ancient pine forests. The climb is steady but very gentle, winding up in comfortable switchbacks. In about 2.5–3 hours at a relaxed pace, we'll gain most of our elevation and reach the Chitakhevi Ridge (about 1300–1400 meters above sea level).
Chitakhevi Ridge and panoramic views
Once we hit the ridge, we land on a relatively flat plateau. The forest opens up here and there, revealing stunning views of the canyons and peaks of the Borjomi Nature Reserve. It's the perfect spot for an hour-long break to eat lunch and recharge in the quiet, pine-scented air.
Kvabiskhevi Gorge
After a break, we start the descent into Kvabiskhevi. This section is pretty steep, with the trail zigzagging down the forested slope. Trekking poles will be a lifesaver here to save your knees. Near the end, the path opens up to scenic cliffs and meadows in the Kvabiskhevi river valley—perfect for catching your breath, splashing some cool water on your face, and cruising through the last flat kilometer to the finish line.
