What you'll see on the route

Our climb kicks off from the Gergeti Trinity Church (2170 m). We’ll leave the green slopes behind and hit the same trail used by mountaineers.
With every step, the landscape gets more rugged: alpine meadows give way to rocky scree, and the summit of Kazbegi (5054 m) reveals itself in full, its massive scale putting everything into perspective.

We’ll hike up to the modern AltiHut (3014 m) — one of the highest mountain shelters in the area. Pushing a bit further, we’ll reach the tongue of the Gergeti Glacier.
In summer, it’s a raw mix of ice, grey dust, and rock. No postcard-perfect polish here, just pure, intimidating power. You’ll see exactly where the cliffs end and the permafrost begins, feel the icy wind off the slopes, and finally grasp the true scale of the Caucasus Range.

Route Schedule

07:30 AM – 10:30 AM | Drive from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church
  • Cruising along the Georgian Military Highway. Quick coffee stop in Gudauri or at a gas station.

10:30 AM – 2:00 PM | The Ascent: Church — Pass — AltiHut
  • A steady, active climb. We’ll keep the group's pace, taking breaks to catch our breath and snap photos.
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Reaching the glacier and exploring
  • Tackling the final stretch past the hut. We'll hit the viewpoint to see the glacier tongue meeting the moraine.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Picnic at altitude
  • Lunch with a view of the summit. Appetite hits different at this altitude.

16:00 – 18:30 | Descent to Gergeti Church
  • Heading back down. Your knees will definitely thank you for bringing trekking poles.

  • 18:30 – 21:30 | Heading back to Tbilisi
  • Transfer to 300 Aragvians metro station. Wrapping up a long and epic day.

Important: This timing is just an estimate. It's a tough route with about 1000 meters of elevation gain. Actual time depends on the group's fitness and how everyone handles the altitude (pace usually drops after 2500m).
